A 7 km route from Matosinhos to Foz do Porto

Matosinhos Part I

From Matosinhos to Foz do Porto, a route with tradition, history and sea air. In this publication we cover part of a 7 km route that brings together a set of authentic experiences.

We start with Mercado de Matosinhos, heart of the commercialization of fish to the public since 1950, a market where traditional commerce prevails in a sober and architecturally evolved building.

We then detour to the Church of Senhor do Bom Jesus, the religious center of the fishing community of Matosinhos.

Then we recommend a visit to the “Pinhais” Canning Factory, known for being a reliquary of the artisanal method of preparing canned sardines.

Lunch should take place with the King of Matosinhos gastronomy, the fish of the day, caught in the Atlantic and whose “fish auctions” take place daily on Rua Heróis de França.

We continue to Praia de Matosinhos, with its extensive sand, and a sea that only ends at the horizon line. Get lost among sculptures, people and enjoy the sea air until you come across a suspended sculpture, about 50m long, designed by Janet Echelman, in honor of local fishermen.

Today's post stops at Forte Francisco Xavier, better known in Porto as Castelo do Queijo. This fort, dating from the 17th century, is one of the highlights of this route that we advise you to visit.

Don't miss the rest of the tour, scheduled for soon and ending in Foz do Douro!
